I agree that Vera Miles did an exemplary job in "Psycho." Even though Janet Leigh's Marion Crane appears to be the more interesting/complex character, she's ultimately a red herring as to what the storyline is about (uncovering Norman Bates's secret). Since the story of Norman and "Mother," and resolving what Norman is hiding up in the house in the Hill, are ultimately what the main storyline of "Psycho" is really about, I'd argue that Vera Miles is the real leading lady of the actual plot of "Psycho," not Janet Leigh. But after seeing HBO's "The Girl", recounting Hitchcock's obsession with Tippi Hedren during the making "The Birds" and "Marnie", I approach "Hitchcock" with some trepidation.

However well performed, Hitch and Hedren were caricatures and the HBO version showed little regard for the films they were making. As I understand it, "Hitchcock" has less to do with "Psycho" than it has with the complex (sexless) personal and professional relationship between Hitch and his wife, Alma.

I suspect that little attention is paid to Vera Miles, although in many ways her performance is the glue that holds "Psycho" together (in much the same way Rod Taylor's performance was the center of gravity for "The Birds").

Vera Miles had the daunting task of transferring the audience's sympathy and rooting interest from her sister (Janet Leigh), who unexpectedly is murdered at the end of the first reel. And she pulls it off beautifully.

Ray Cunneffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12212272592877428811noreply@blogger.com
